Finished with Olivia Hartshorn's Fibonacci Swirls. Learned a lot, really enjoyed stitching it. 18ct canvas, Caron Watercolours, pearl cotton, Kreinik braid. #needlepoint #needlework #stitchersofmastodon #stitching
I think the #xz incident is teaching us that our infrastructure is dangerously fragile in the face of well-organized/funded attackers. The response isn’t “try harder” or “donate to your OSS project”, it needs to be institutional, professional, and at scale.
So, here’s my proposal, called “OSQI”, aimed at starting a how-to discussion: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2024/04/01/OSQI
The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining 🌧📶
Happy April Cools! A few people and I decided lying for April 1st is cliché, so we're surprising you with truthful essays on unexpected topics.
Mine is about the hardest hardware problem I've ever had to debug:

Them: So you're the soothsayer, you can tell us what is to come
Me: Ha ha no common misconception; I'm the oofsayer, I can only commiserate in your misfortunes
Them: So we wasted all this time searching for you
Me: Oof

My family has redefined "prank" to mean "a surprise nice gesture you do for someone". So for example: sneaking out early in the morning to buy donuts for the whole family, or doing a household chore that's usually someone else's responsibility, or hiding a package of someone's favorite candy where they will find it unexpectedly. The key is that it is something that you know the prank recipient will be not just surprised but also happy about. I highly recommend this approach, it makes April Fool's Day much more fun imo
Hello! I made another silly downpour game: https://downpour.games/~terry/a-proper-cup-of-tea
This is big: one of the xz-utils / liblzma *upstream maintainers* added malicious code to the last couple of releases. This is the person who actually publishes and signs the tarballs. If you are using liblzma 5.6.0 or 5.6.1 make sure to update your packages asap and consider reinstalling the OS or recreating the container.

“Are you sure want to commit to this? Once you’re a made being there is no leaving.”
“Of course, boss. I’ve always been loyal to this thing of ours.”
“All right. Members, if any one of you has doubt about admitting this candidate to the Elucidated Sibren of the Ebon Night, let them speak-“
“*achoo*”
“What was that?”
“Sorry, the dust. *choo*”
“No it came from lower down. Like your pocket. Is that an Imp? They’re wearing A FUCKING IMP. It’s the Watch! Kill it, then Execute Plan Scram!”

I have been obsessed with this dinner lately: pasta (any kind) + a sauce made of butter/lemon juice/pesto + roasted cherry tomatoes. I have made this 4 times in the past 3 weeks. It is so delicious and feels Fancy while still requiring a low enough amount of energy that I can actually manage to cook it on weeknights!!
another weird one from the early issues of Fantasy & Science Fiction....

-Mom, mom, can I have a fugue?

From the linked post: "In this latest edition of “overthinking everything”, I designed a game to convince myself to do basic household chores. The game comprises two dice throws. The first throw says what to improve. The second throw says where to do it."
I too constantly have to come up with new systems to get my brain to do basic chores, and this one looks fairly promising :)
Oh nice, you can add die rolls to #downpour games. If for example you want an 80% chance of a choice leading to outcome A and a 20% chance of outcome B, just add A to the random choice link 4 times and add B once. Was hoping this would work and it does!
